Bowen Yang is addressing a big rumor about himself and Dave Chappelle.

If you were unaware, during an episode of Saturday Night Live this season, the controversial comedian made a cameo and appeared onstage with the rest of the cast during the show’s closing moments.

Some noticed that Bowen stood far apart from Dave onstage, sparking speculation that he wanted to physically distance himself from the actor who has a history of making anti-LGBTQ+ jokes.

Was that the truth?

Speaking to Variety, Bowen explained that he wasn’t standing anywhere different.

“I stand where I always stand on good nights. It was not a physical distance that anyone was creating,” he said. “It had to do with so many things that were completely internal.”

Did Dave‘s involvement upset him? “It was about other people’s response in the show. I was just confused, that was it,” he said

On the topic of controversial jokes, Bowen reflected on cancel culture.

“Everybody is highly personal about what they find funny, so it’s everyone’s value systems meeting at the same time. That makes it completely ripe for conflict,” he reflected. “Not conflict. I always boil it down to a healthy discussion about what’s going on in the world.”

One of Dave‘s longtime friends spoke critically about some of his jokes.
