Warning! Contains Spoilers For Outer Range Season 1 And Mild Spoilers For Season 2The Outer Range season 1 finale confirmed several theories and paved the way for season 2’s release in May 2024. In only eight episodes, season 1 of Outer Range managed to create a compelling mystery that was complex enough to generate theories and instigate viewers. Behind the western setting was an elaborate time travel story with elements of the supernatural. Throughout the first season, the conversation about the show revolved around how the Void’s time travel worked and who Autumn really was.

By the end of Outer Range season 1, those discussions were proven valid. Contrary to what sometimes happens with other stories based on mystery boxes, all the clues set up by Outer Range were paid off somehow in the finale, such as during the confrontation between Royal and Autumn. The season finale finally revealed who Autumn really was in a montage, along with Royal, who was also revealed to be a time-traveler. In addition, Outer Range’s season 1 finale also gave an answer as to what had happened to Rebecca. With season 2 now available, there’s never been a better time to recap on the Outer Range season 1 ending.

Autumn’s Identity Fully Explained

Amy And Autumn Are One And The Same

Confirming one of the biggest Outer Range theories, Autumn was revealed to be Amy from the future. Several elements already suggested that this was the case, such as the resemblance in how they look and Autumn’s interest in the Abbott family and in Perry. The way Autumn addressed Royal as if she’d known him for a long time also supported that theory. The definitive proof that Autumne was Amy from the future was the scar on her forehead, the exact same scar Amy had gotten at the end of Outer Range episode 6.

Unlike Royal, she actually became obsessed with the concept of time and started to almost worship the Void.

At some point, Amy learned about the Void’s history and its ability to time travel. However, unlike Royal, she actually became obsessed with the concept of time and started to almost worship the Void. She also learned the truth about Josh Brolin’s character being a time-traveler at some point and eventually went back in time to interfere with how her grandfather was, in a way, protecting the Void from outside influences. Royal now knows that Autumn is his granddaughter and has taken her back home to heal her injuries.

Where Did Perry Go?

Perry Went Further Back Into His Own Timeline

After going through so much in Outer Range season 1, including never discovering what happened to Rebecca and being charged with murder, Perry found in the Void his only hope. Inspired by his father’s story, he jumped into the hole, dreaming of a better life. Considering the Void has already been used for travel both into the future (in Royal’s case) and into the past (in Autumn/Amy’s case), Perry could be at any point in history.

Season 2, of course, revealed more about where Perry went and what he got up to after he vanished into the hole at the end of Outer Range season 2. A key Outer Range season 2 cliffhanger directly involves him, as it’s entirely possible that he ended up creating a new timeline by altering key events in his own history.

Where Did All The Animals Come From?

The Unexplained Wildlife Had Emerged From The Void

Throughout Outer Range season 1, several animals that did not belong in the local landscape, and some that appeared to be even prehistoric, were seen appearing in the town. Now, it was clear that they were coming out of the Void. This means that the animals were from different times in history and most likely fell into the hole while walking during their original time periods.

This key reveal at the end of Outer Range season 1 explains why there were so many of them at the end of the episode, as the Void was serving as a portal connecting different points in history to the present day.

Why Autumn Wanted To Kill Royal

Autumn Sees Royal As A Threat To Her Plans

Autumn’s plans were not entirely revealed in the Outer Range season finale, but it was clear that she deemed Royal a threat to the Void’s use of time travel. Autumn knew that Royal himself was a time traveler but also that he denied and despised the Void and everything connected to it. Royal made sure that no one else had access to that portal, and there was a risk that he would cause the Void to be closed somehow.

Another possibility is that the fact that Royal was a time traveler who never returned to his original time period caused some sort of anomaly in the timeline — such as the mountain disappearing — and that Autumn believed she needed to eliminate it to maintain the integrity of time and space. In any case, Autumn had judged Royal to be a threat from the start — both to her and to her plans for the time travel. Killing Royal is clearly not Autumn’s end game, but the character played by Josh Brolin was an obstacle in her path.

Where Has Rebecca Been All This Time (& Where Did She Take Amy)?

Rebecca Had Been Working With The Future Version Of Her Daughter

One of the biggest mysteries of Outer Range since the beginning of the series was what had happened to Rebecca, Perry’s wife. However, it was not until Autumn started mentioning Rebecca that it became clear that Amy’s mother’s disappearance was somehow connected to the mystery of the Void and the time travel. It turns out that Rebecca was very much alive, and the Outer Range season finale showed that she was working along with Autumn – the future version of her daughter.

It’s Rebecca who was Autumn’s secret benefactor, and it can be assumed that, at least during the time Autumn was in town, Rebecca was also nearby. However, it is still not clear if she had been hidden close to the Abbotts this whole time or if Rebecca herself had also time-traveled at some point. It is also still a mystery whether Autumn first contacted her mother or if it was Rebecca who placed her daughter on that mission.

Either way, Rebecca was finally reunited with present-day Amy by the time Outer Range season 2 began. Considering Rebecca had been secretly helping with Autumn’s plan, it’s likely that she will now take Amy away from the Abbotts and start telling her the secrets of the time travel.

How Outer Range’s Ending Sets Up Season 2

The Many Reveals Were Crucial To The Plot Of The Next Season

Unlike other time-travel shows like Lost, Outer Range could work as just a one-off story. However, there are enough cliffhangers and unanswered questions raised in the finale that the story carried over into Outer Range season 2, which was released in May 2024. There were several key ways that season 1 set up Outer Range season 2 and, by extension, a story that looks set to continue into Outer Range season 3.

The biggest set up for Outer Range season 2 was, of course, Perry’s fate. Season 1 saw Perry jumping through the hole, and it was then revealed in season 2 that he ended up further back in his own timeline and was able to replace himself. However, his actions during season 2 could significantly alter history and even create an alternate universe.

The reveals about Autumn and Amy were also incredibly important for Outer Range season 2. Throughout the second season more about Autumn is revealed, although season 2 didn’t show every detail when it came to how Amy became Autumn. This is another factor that plays into Perry’s destination, as it’s possible that — if Perry has changed the timeline — that Autumn and Royal (as time travelers themselves) may be the only two who remember the original version of events.
