Masters of the Universe has redefined He-Man’s lore for a new era, giving his universe a mind-bending origin that all fans of the franchise need to see. Dark Horse’s Masters of the Universe: Revolution #1, a tie-in to the Netflix show, is not only giving fans the origin of Hordak, but the entire He-Man universe as well–and this origin would be perfect for a future animated project.

Masters of the Universe: Revolution #1 is written by Tim Sheridan, from a script by Sheridan, Rob Davis and Ted Biaselli, and is drawn by Daniel HDR. The issue’s opening pages depict the origin of the universe. Two primordial magical forces, embodied by an eagle (Zoar) and a snake (Ka) fight, and it threatens to upend the nascent universe.

Zoar represented the forces of good and Ka evil.

In the midst of their conflict, a third force, represented by a ram, appears, and balances the two out–for a while.

Eternia Is a One of a Kind Place

Eternia Is Key Not Only to He-Man Lore, But the Universe as a Whole

Originating in the 1980s, Masters of the Universe would go on to become one of the decade’s top toy lines, as well as one of the most popular entertainment franchises ever. Masters of the Universe is set on Eternia, a world where science and technology exist side by side. Various versions of the franchise have explored Eternia’s origins, and all agree that its existence is vital to the survival of the universe. Eternia’s magical powers are consolidated in Castle Grayskull, making it a target for villains from all over, including Skeletor.

Yet the new origin depicted in Masters of the Universe: Revolution #1 goes back even further, to a time before Eternia existed. Zoar, the benevolent force in this issue, is the patron of the Sorceress and the force of good. The snake-like Ka, who later will reside on Snake Mountain, is evil and corrupt. Between the two, they nearly destroyed Eternia and the universe, if not for the balancing force. Even then, however, this force became corrupt too, and would form the basis for Skeletor’s power. The magic of Eternia runs deep, as seen in this issue.

Eternia’s Origins Are Perfect For A Big Screen Adaptation

Artist Daniel HDR depicts the battles between Zoar and Ka in a grand fashion, imparting upon fans just how urgent this war is. If depicted in animated, or even live-action form, this sequence would capture the hearts and minds of Masters of the Universe fans all over. The battle between Zoar and Ka shaped Eternia and He-Man’s lore, making it a natural to show on-screen.
