Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles will undoubtedly be the headliners of Team USA’s track and field delegation in Paris. But they won’t be the only stars.
Team USA sent more than 100 track and field athletes to the Olympics three years ago. Another sizable group will be heading overseas this July, and the final step in the journey to Paris is happening right now.

The USA Olympic track and field trials are taking place at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon, and Olympic hopefuls abound. For many, a top-three finish in their respective event will be enough to secure a spot.
There’s one more wrinkle to the process: an athlete who doesn’t meet the Olympic qualification standard in their event could still make the cut if they are high enough in World Athletics’ rankings. That means the full U.S. Olympic track and field delegation might not be set until July 7, a week after the trials end, as some athletes await the final rankings ahead of the Summer Games.
For the most part, though, the Olympic trials in Eugene will determine which track and field athletes are headed to Paris to represent the United States.

Tuesday, June 25 and Wednesday, June 26 are practice days and there are no competitions scheduled. U.S. Olympic track and field trials will resume Thursday, June 27.
