Wildfires in Hawaii have devastated the historic metropolis of Lahaina, the previous capital of the islands once they had been an impartial kingdom.
Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz, who surveyed the injury, stated the town had been “lowered to ashes.” Though the blaze in Lahaina is 80% contained, there’s nonetheless an energetic hearth. The town stays with out energy.
At the least 67 individuals have been killed by the fires as search, rescue and restoration operations proceed. Gov. Josh Inexperienced stated tons of of houses have been destroyed, leaving hundreds with out shelter.
Lahaina carries deep cultural significance to Hawaiians. King Kamehameha I established Lahaina as his royal residence within the early nineteenth century.
“It is completely heartbreaking. The restoration course of shall be lengthy, however we’re dedicated to those households and communities,” Schatz stated on social media.
