Broncos vs. Bills final score, results: Denver earns road upset as late penalties cost Buffalo

The Broncos might be wishing they didn’t have a bye in Week 9.

After a tumultuous 1-5 start to the season, Denver rattled off back-to-back wins over the Packers and Chiefs to give itself a glimmer of hope in a campaign that nearly went off the rails. Can Sean Payton’s team continue those winning ways on the road after a week off?

The Bills haven’t looked like the same dominant team they were the last two seasons, but Buffalo remains tough to beat in upstate New York. The Bills haven’t lost a home game this season, though there have been a couple of close calls as Josh Allen and the offense struggle to find consistency.

The key for the Broncos will be their defense. The unit was abysmal early in the season, infamously allowing 70 points in a loss to the Dolphins, but it has bounced back tremendously and surrendered a total of just 45 points over Denver’s last three games. If Vance Joseph’s group can contain Allen and Stefon Diggs, it may be an indication the Broncos’ season is far from over.

Despite the Bills’ uncharacteristic play, they remain firmly in the mix behind Miami in the AFC East. While not a divisional game, a win over Denver would only strengthen Buffalo’s position in the division and in the conference as a whole.

Final: Broncos 24, Bills 22

11:27 p.m. FIELD GOAL — The Broncos take down the Bills on Wil Lutz’s last-second field goal! Two massive penalties cost Buffalo in the end, and the Broncos are right there in the AFC playoff race at 4-5.

11:26 p.m. — Lutz MISSES from 41 yards out, but the Bills had 12 men on the field. This game has everything.

11:24 p.m. — The Bills are using their timeouts to try and preserve some time, so this will be drawn out further.

11:23 p.m. — The Broncos will just kneel on this and leave it in the hands (or leg) of Wil Lutz.

11:22 p.m. — A massive pass interference call comes in on Taron Johnson, who made too much contact with Jerry Jeudy on a ball Wilson just flung up in the air under pressure. The Broncos are easily into field goal range. Wow.

11:20 p.m. — Wilson gets sacked on 2nd & 4. That absolutely can’t happen if you’re the veteran quarterback. The Broncos will have to work their way back into field goal range.

11:18 p.m. — Wilson was well-protected on third down and hit Perine again to get over midfield.

11:17 p.m. — Damar Hamlin is into the game for the Bills with the secondary banged up…

11:16 p.m. — Wilson flips it to Samaje Perine, who breaks a tackle and makes it all the way out to the Broncos’ 43-yard line. A strong start for Denver as a Bills injury timeout pauses the drive.

11:15 p.m. — So, Russell Wilson has 1:55 and two timeouts to at least get into field goal range. Nothing has come easy for the Broncos’ offense tonight, but Denver can take its time and be methodical here.

Bills 22, Broncos 21

11:12 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Allen runs it in for the touchdown! Because of the missed extra-points by Denver, that will put the Bills in front. What a response by this hot-and-cold Buffalo offense.

Josh Allen! The Bills take their first lead with 1:55 left

11:09 p.m. — Cook is running hard right now, breaking free from Nik Bonitto to turn what would’ve been a loss in the red zone into a yard. He has 109 yards on the ground despite the first half benching.

11:06 p.m. — What was that?!? James Cook fumbles for the second time tonight, but it bounces right back into his hands and he ends up with 42 yards. The Bills are on the precipice of the red zone.

He picked it up and kept running 😱

11:02 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Wilson comes under pressure but quickly hits Javonte Williams for the go-ahead touchdown! Wilson saved that drive at a couple different points. The Broncos have the lead, but a botched snap on the extra-point try could loom large.

11:01 p.m. — Williams picks up a few more yards for the first down, and you’d have to think the Bills’ defense is starting to wear down. It’s 1st & Goal for Denver.

11:00 p.m. — Javonte Williams makes up serious yardage after a false start and takes the Broncos inside the 10.

10:58 p.m. — A bizarre sequence here as Sutton catches a pass from Wilson and loses it, but officials rule he was down before he lost the ball and had enough to get the first down. That was pretty close to a fumble.

10:56 p.m. — A heads-up play by Wilson to somehow avoid pressure just long enough to flip the ball to Samaje Perine for a first down.

10:54 p.m. — The Broncos’ offense finally gets something going with a completion to Jeudy for the first down. Denver might need a few more yards to feel confident letting Lutz attempt a field goal.

10:53 p.m. — It begins: A false start backs up the Broncos on second down.

10:49 p.m. — Some extracurricular activity after a nice return by Mims, who gets hit hard. Denver will have solid field position, but that hasn’t meant much in the second half.

10:48 p.m. — Allen makes a dangerous pass on third down, and it falls incomplete. The Bills will punt it right back to the Broncos.

10:46 p.m. — Diggs picks up a first down as the Bills’ offense tries to put that last turnover behind them.

End of third quarter: Broncos 15, Bills 15

10:41 p.m. — The Broncos have gotten opportunity after opportunity in this game and just continue to waste them. Denver’s drive quickly goes haywire, and a punt is likely coming on 4th & 6.

10:38 p.m. FUMBLE — A bad exchange between Allen and Cook ends up in the hands of Alex Singleton! That’s the fourth turnover of the night for the Bills, keeping the Broncos right in this game.

A fumbled exchange turns into the @Broncos fourth takeaway of the game

10:37 p.m. — Big play from Gabe Davis, who goes 37 yards on a pass from Allen and builds on the momentum Buffalo built on its last drive.

10:34 p.m. — Wilson is sacked on back-to-back plays to end the Broncos’ drive. That was the 2022 Broncos offense on that sequence.

10:33 p.m. — Wilson had time on second down but apparently found no open receivers. Greg Rousseau takes him down.

10:31 p.m. — Wilson uses his legs to pick up the first down on 3rd & 2.

10:29 p.m. — Marvin Mims with a really nice 31-yard return for the Broncos to give Denver solid field position.

Bills 15, Broncos 15

10:26 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Murray runs it in for the touchdown! The Bills have tied this game after the fumble by Sutton.

Just like that… Latavius Murray ties the game!

10:25 p.m. — Latavius Murray sets up the Bills with 3rd & goal. Both Buffalo running backs look great tonight.

10:23 p.m. — Allen finds an open Shakir downfield for 24 yards, and suddenly Buffalo is in the red zone looking to tie the game.

10:22 p.m. — James Cook runs for 11 yards to kickstart the Bills’ drive. He’s looked great ever since he re-entered the game following the fumble.

10:18 p.m. FUMBLE — Courtland Sutton caught a pass from Wilson, probably got close enough for the Broncos to go for it on fourth down, and then lost it on a hit from Taron Johnson. The Bills recover and will pick up from near where they left off on their last drive.

Bills defense gets a takeaway of their own!

10:16 p.m. — The Broncos are already facing a key 3rd & 6 and call timeout. They would need a first down to slip into field goal range.

10:12 p.m. — Allen’s pass goes over Khalil Shakir’s head, and suddenly the Broncos will have strong field position with a chance to extend their lead to two possessions.

10:11 p.m. — Kincaid picks up eight yards on 3rd & 10, but the Bills will go for it from just inside their own territory.

10:07 p.m. — Wilson gets a few yards back on a run, but the Bills still force a three-and-out to start the second half. That’s the start Buffalo needed after such a tumultuous finish to the second quarter.

10:03 p.m. — Penalties cost the Broncos’ offense throughout the first half, and they’re quickly a problem in the second half as a false start compounds a holding penalty. It’s 3rd & 17.

End of first half: Broncos 15, Bills 8

9:47 p.m. FIELD GOAL — That was a more tense finish than the Broncos wanted. They couldn’t stop the clock on fourth down and had to rush out the field goal unit with seconds ticking away, but they line up perfectly and get the ball to Lutz for another field goal. The Broncos lead 15-8 and get the ball out of halftime.

9:44 p.m. INTERCEPTION — The Bills did not play it safe, and it immediately burned them. Allen is picked off by Fabian Moreau, who has the Broncos set up with another scoring opportunity before halftime. This could be a disastrous sequence for Buffalo.

9:41 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Lutz just barely gets it through from 49 yards out in the wind. The Broncos managed that sequence well after the holding penalty. Denver leads by four. 45 seconds left in the half. Do the Bills have some magic in them? They’re out of timeouts.

9:40 p.m. — Wilson puts together a nice 10-yard run on third down, giving Lutz a chance to extend the lead.

9:39 p.m. — The Broncos run it on 2nd & 20 and pick up a few yards, but it’s going to take a few more for Wil Lutz to have a serious opportunity. Let’s see if Denver plays it safe with another possession coming up after halftime.

9:37 p.m. — A killer holding penalty on the Broncos, backing them out of what already was fringe field goal range.

9:35 p.m. — Wilson picks up the first down himself, and the Broncos should at least be able to keep the ball from getting back in Josh Allen’s hands before halftime. Can they score, though?

9:32 p.m. — It’ll be 3rd & 1 for the Broncos out of the two-minute warning. One more first down would push Denver right about into field goal range.

9:31 p.m. — Smart play by Wilson, who gets the ball out quickly and finds Sutton for 32 yards. The Broncos are in business with plenty of time left in the half.

Broncos 9, Bills 8

9:26 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Allen finds a wide open Kincaid in the end zone! That was some answer by the Bills’ offense after a lifeless start to the night. It’s a 22-yard score for Kincaid as his breakout stretch continues. Thanks to a penalty, the Bills go for two and get the two. It’s 9-8, Broncos.

9:25 p.m. — Woah, Diggs breaks a tackle and goes for 15 yards. It looked like Fabian Moreau had him wrapped up for a second there.

9:24 p.m. — That’s four consecutive touches by Cook, who is fully back from his brief benching. The Bills are nearing midfield.

9:22 p.m. — James Cook is back in and making plays. He rips off a 14-yard run after a 7-yard grab on a pass by Allen.

Broncos 9, Bills 0

9:17 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — A booth review overturns the call! What a job by Sutton to somehow get both feet down in bounds for the touchdown. The extra point is no good, but the Broncos extend their lead.

Incredible footwork. @SuttonCourtland

9:14 p.m. — Wilson is pressured on 4th & 2, and his circus throw to Sutton is incomplete as Sutton goes out of bounds. It’s a close call worth reviewing, but that will be tough to conclusively overturn…

9:13 p.m. — Some teams keep the offense out on fourth down to try to draw the defense offsides. This time, the Broncos bring the kicking unit out to try to draw Buffalo offsides. Unsuccessful. Denver will go for it after a timeout.

9:10 p.m. — Wilson finds Jerry Jeudy for a big first down. The Broncos are into the red zone.

9:07 p.m. — Courtland Sutton takes a big hit from rookie Dorian Williams, and that’s going to give Denver another 15 yards… The Broncos are nearing the red zone.

9:03 p.m. — Allen’s pass goes off Dalton Kincaid’s hands, and the Bills are a bit fortunate no defender was there to make it a turnover. Buffalo is punting again, and boos are raining down from the crowd.

8:58 p.m. — An eight-yard pass to Adam Trautman on 3rd & 13 isn’t enough to get the Broncos anywhere near field goal range, so what was a promising drive for Denver ends in another punt.

8:55 p.m. — Russell Wilson shows off some speed and runs straight ahead for a first down. It looked like he might’ve left a few yards on the table, but he played it safe and gladly took the first down near midfield.

8:49 p.m. — Javonte Williams pushes forward for a first down and gives the Broncos a nice start to their drive. As successful as Denver’s defense has been, the offense hasn’t been able to string much of anything together.

8:46 p.m. — James Cook still didn’t see any action on that drive, so that fumble cost him some goodwill with Sean McDermott.

8:44 p.m. — Allen comes under pressure on 3rd & 9 and just misses Stefon Diggs. That’s a quick drive for the Bills, who still have no points and two turnovers to show for their work.

8:39 p.m. — Wilson comes under pressure on 3rd & 18 and throws incomplete. The Broncos will punt for the first time tonight. So far, the Bills’ turnovers have only resulted in three points for Denver.

8:36 p.m. — What happens here? Marvin Mims is tackled behind the line of scrimmage for a loss, Rasul Douglas picks up the football and runs it into the end zone, and one official calls it a touchdown. Bill Vinovich overrules and (correctly) declares Mims down by contact. It’ll be 2nd & 18 for the Broncos.

READ MORE  "My hunger is to improve"

8:35 p.m. — Russell Wilson finds Javonte Williams for a big 17-yard catch-and-run to convert on third down and take Denver close to midfield.

8:33 p.m. — Lil’Jordan Humphrey makes a nice catch to give the Broncos a quick first down.

8:30 p.m. INTERCEPTION — This time Allen is intercepted. His pass bounces right off the hands of Gabe Davis and into the diving arms of Justin Simmons. The Broncos will have poor field position, but they’re a perfect 2-for-2 in forcing turnovers so far.

8:28 p.m. — The Latavius Murray game? The veteran rips off runs of 9 and 20 yards to power the Bills down the field. James Cook appears to be benched, at least temporarily, after his fumble.

8:26 p.m. — Facing 3rd & long, Allen throws a dart to Gabe Davis for the first down. Allen and Davis weren’t on the same page just a few plays ago, but that’s a big step in the right direction for Buffalo’s offense.

8:24 p.m. — Josh Allen was nearly intercepted by Alex Singleton… That was much closer than anyone in that stadium wanted. Meanwhile, a holding call knocks the Bills back to 1st & 20.

Broncos 3, Bills 0

8:21 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Samaje Perine makes up some much-needed yardage to put Wil Lutz in position for a 40-yard field goal. Denver doesn’t cash in but still puts points on the board. 3-0, Broncos.

8:19 p.m. — The Bills’ defense already has the Broncos’ offense on its toes, and a false start from Mike McGlinchey makes matters worse for Denver on third down.

8:17 p.m. FUMBLE — That wasn’t the statement the Bills wanted. James Cook gets the ball ripped right out of his hands on the first play of the game, and the Broncos have an instant scoring opportunity.
