Details on the Chicago Med season 9 premiere shed light on the history that Oliver Platt’s Dr. Daniel Charles has with a new character. Returning for a shorter season than normal because of the scheduling fallout from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Chicago Med will nonetheless feature significant developments as the NBC medical drama looks to move forward from a pair of high-profile cast exits.

TV Insider shares that, in the upcoming Chicago Med season 9 premiere, Charles can’t shake that he knows the new Emergency Department attending. The character, named Dr. Mitch Ripley, is played Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D alum Luke Mitchell. The actor is also known for his roles in Legacies and Blindspot.

Chicago Med season 9 debuts Wednesday, January 17 at 8 PM ET on NBC.

What To Know About Chicago Med Season 9

There is indeed history between Charles and the new doctor. The initial casting announcement for Dr. Ripley noted that the Emergency Department Doctor has a connection to Platt’s character, in addition to a troubled past. Although he’s currently a guest actor, Mitchell could become a series regular moving forward. But there’s more drama to be found elsewhere in the Chicago Med season 9 premiere.

In the episode, titled “Row Row Row Your Boat on a Rocky Sea”, the E.D. is filled with patients from a crash, leading the entire team to pull in to help. On another front, Archer (Steven Weber) has second thoughts on the eve of his kidney transplant. This picks up from a previous storyline, in which Archer’s son Sean (Luigi Sottile) is a match. However, after relapsing on his sobriety, Sean couldn’t donate. At the time, Archer planned to follow the advice of Asher (Jessy Schram) of a different dialysis.
