really good conversations
” with Netflix about keeping the show going.

Netflix may have only just recently released Dead Boy Detectives season 1, but showrunners Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz are keen to return for season 2. Based on the characters created for DC’s Vertigo imprint by Neil Gaiman, the Dead Boy Detectives follows the investigations of two teenaged ghosts who have elected to remain on Earth and solve supernatural crimes. Set within the same universe as The Sandman, the show even featured cameo appearances from the Endless known as Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and Despair (Donna Preston).

Speaking with Deadline, the Dead Boy Detectives showrunners spoke about the future of The Sandman spinoff show and their hopes for season 2. Suggesting that they are still yet to find a limit about how far the series could go, Yockey and Schwartz revealed they’ve already had “really good conversations” about the direction of season 2. Schwartz also explained that the Dead Boy Detectives season 1 finale was intentionally set up to allow the show to continue into season 2 and beyond. Check out their comments below:

Steve Yockey: I think there’s not a limit that we found yet to how far we could go, but that’s very brash answer. I would say we’ve had some really, really good conversations about what a second season would look like. The cool thing about the show is, because it has the overriding season arcs but also a case of the week, it has the kind of legs where it can just keep going. So we hope we get that opportunity.

Beth Schwartz: We ended the season specifically to set up a Season 2, because all our characters are going back to London and the agency has expanded. Just all the fun and the new dynamics that we could explore in Season 2 would be really, really exciting for us.

Will The Dead Boy Detectives Cross Paths With The Sandman Himself?

Edwin and Charles Have Already Met Two Endless

First introduced in the seminal Season of Mists storyline from the original The Sandman comics, Dead Boy Detective’s ghostly sleuths are intimately connected to the world of Lord Morpheus and his fellow Endless. While season 1 of the new Netflix show helped to establish this sense of continuity via the respective appearances of Death and Despair, many viewers are wondering if the spectral Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland will get a chance to cross paths with The Sandman himself, Tom Sturridge’s Dream.

While the duo’s comic book origins would suggest that such a meeting could be on the cards, at this stage, it is impossible to tell how far both Dead Boy Detectives and The Sandman will divert from the world established in Gaiman’s original comics. Dead Boy Detectives has already glossed over the duo’s origin story, mainly given that the Season of Mists comic arc in which Lucifer Morningstar empties Hell of its residents has not yet happened in the hit Netflix show.

Related Is Dead Boy Detectives Connected To Netflix’s Sandman? With Dead Boy Detectives and The Sandman being on Netflix and crossing over in the comics, audiences have wondered if they’re in the same universe.

However, this shift in the shared chronology of both shows may eventually work in the favor of fans hoping for a face-to-face meeting with Dream. With Edwin and Charles now expanding their supernatural Detective Agency in London, they would likely benefit from a sudden influx of cases should The Sandman pursue the Season of Mists storyline. Supposing Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer Morningstar does indeed release her captive spirits into the world at large, in that case, Lord Morpheus may find himself seeking the assistance of the Dead Boy Detectives in person in a season 2.

The entirety of Dead Boy Detectives season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
