The “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” star was spotted walking into the gym, next to his wife Arlene Silver, in Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon — one day before his 98th birthday.

When asked about being at the gym hours before turning 98, Dyke said, “Tomorrow [is my birthday], that’s right. My God, nobody should be 98 years old.”

“I hate going to the gym. She makes me go to the gym,” he said, smiling as he pointed to his wife. He was seen wearing a gray sweater, blue sweatpants, and black shoes as he got ready to get his workout in.

Dick Van Dyke was recently surprised with an advance taping of “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic”, which is a two-hour tribute CBS special featuring footage and live performances of his decades-long career.

“You think, ‘I don’t deserve this,’ but it’s difficult to say how I felt,” he told PEOPLE ahead of his big day. “I came home, and I said, ‘You know something? It’s going to be a couple of days before this actually sinks in that it happened.’ I never expected that kind of recognition. My whole life went before me. I didn’t realize I had done so many things while I was 75 years in show business.”

“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Disney’s “Mary Poppins” and “Me Ol’ Bamboo” from “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” were among the hits highlighted in the special.

When speaking on the 60-year-old song from “Mary Poppins,” Van Dyke said, “You know, Julie [Andrews] sang, like, a little sharp, on top of the note, and I just went crazy. I’m flat most of the time. I had such trouble staying with her. She was always just a little bit sharp.”

The “Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic” premieres Thursday, Dec. 21 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
