Echo Season 2 Gets Disappointing Update From Marvel Executive

Summary

A second season for Echo is uncertain, but Marvel Studios is open to having Alaqua Cox return in future MCU projects. Echo’s role in the MCU’s street-level stories creates opportunities for her to reappear, especially in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. Without Echo season 2, Maya Lopez may have a brighter future in crossover events, such as future Avengers or Thunderbolts projects.

The development of a potential Echo season 2 has been given a disappointing update from a Marvel Studios executive. As part of Phase 5 of the MCU, and the first project to fall under the new Marvel Spotlight banner, Echo released all five of its episodes on January 9, 2024. Echo received generally positive responses from audiences, with praise being given to the series’ more grounded storyline, its mature action, and its celebration of Native American culture and representation of the deaf community. However, this praise may not lead to a second season for the MCU’s first Marvel Spotlight series.

Following the release of Marvel Studios’ Echo, The Direct spoke exclusively to Echo’s cinematographer Kira Kelly, and questioned her about the potential for Echo season 2. While Kelly noted that she was “not sure” that Echo season 2 would be the next step for Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez, she stressed that it would be great to see Cox return in the MCU’s future. After Echo’s release, and the rise in viewership for Hawkeye and Netflix’s Daredevil and The Punisher, Marvel Studios is focusing on the MCU’s ongoing street-level stories, which creates some perfect opportunities for Cox to return as Echo.

I’m not sure about that. I feel like the world – you know, anything that we can see Alaqua [Cox in] would be amazing. Whether it’s another season for her or whether or not she’s in the ‘Daredevil’ show coming up or any other show. I would just love any excuse to see Alaqua perform again.

When Could Maya Lopez’s Echo Return To The MCU?

While Alaqua Cox debuted as a minor antagonist in Phase 4’s Hawkeye, Echo saw her renounce her surrogate uncle, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, and become a bona fide superhero in the MCU. This means that Maya Lopez could be key to the MCU’s upcoming street-level stories, which are expected to see Fisk’s Kingpin be elected Mayor of New York City, an evolution that will affect many smaller-scale heroes. This creates many opportunities for Alaqua Cox to return as Echo in the MCU’s future, though the most likely place for her reappearance would be in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Daredevil: Born Again.

Daredevil: Born Again has recently undergone a major creative overhaul, but Wilson Fisk was always planned as a major part of the series, so it’s very likely that Alaqua Cox’s Echo will also return alongside her villainous surrogate uncle. Maya Lopez and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, have already fought in the MCU, so it would be great to see instead join forces against Kingpin. Without Echo season 2, it’s also possible Maya Lopez will have a brighter future in the MCU’s crossover events, such as being featured in future Avengers projects, or even sequels to Phase 5’s Thunderbolts.
