Magnum P.I. star Jay Hernandez opens up about the unplanned series finale, admitting that he does not like how the show ended. The reboot of the original Magnum P.I. starring Tom Selleck debuted in 2018, led by Hernandez in the titular role of Thomas Magnum. Perdita Weeks also starred as Juliet Higgins, along with Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Amy Hill, and Tim Kang. After five seasons and a total of 96 episodes, Magnum P.I. ended on January 3rd.

In a set of social posts, Hernandez responded to a direct mention that he should direct a follow-up Magnum P.I. movie.

The actor indicated that it still could happen, going on to admit: “If I’m being totally honest I didn’t love the show ending how it did.” In the tweets above, Hernandez also thanked the audience for their support.

Why Did NBC Decide To End Magnum P.I.?

Magnum P.I.’s cancellation came about because the deals for the cast expired this past June. NBC’s Universal TV, which produces the reboot alongside CBS Studios, had to decide whether to extend those deals or end the series altogether. NBC decided to cancel the show, citing the uncertainties related to the actors and writers strikes over the summer which ended in the closing months of 2023.

Magnum P.I. season 5 has delivered well for NBC, though it represented a decline from its CBS numbers. Considering the show’s delayed, non-live viewing, the reboot averages about 5 million viewers. That represents a 30 percent decline in total viewership from its time on CBS and a 43 percent fall in the coveted 18-49 age demographic. The second half of the fifth installment largely maintained the same ratings in terms of live viewership.

Addressing whether Magnum P.I. could be revived down the line, showrunner Eric Guggenheim was candid in his response. He noted that the reboot had already been saved once, in its move from CBS to NBC, and stressed that the focus was on providing a satisfying finale. That ending included a proposal from Rick to Suzy and a pretty big sign that Thomas and Juliet would also walk down the aisle eventually.
