Instant analysis of Los Angeles Chargers drafting Joe Alt in first round

The Los Angeles Chargers did not trade their fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and instead made the most Jim Harbaugh kind of pick that they could have made. They turned in the card for Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt.

Alt is a massive tackle at 6-foot-9 and around 320 pounds. He comes to the Chargers as a perfect fit for what Harbaugh likes to do offensively — line up with maulers on the offensive line, as many as he can get out there, and pound you with his running game.

Alt was an All-American for the Irish and he now joins an offensive line that also includes Rashawn Slater, giving the Chargers one of the better bookend tackle groups in football. He also has a great idea of what he will be getting into at the professional level as his father, John Alt, was a tremendous offensive tackle in the league.

John played nine seasons for the Kansas City Chiefs and made the Pro Bowl two times.

Alt has great feet and shows perfect technique. Harbaugh was reportedly interested in another top offensive tackle prospect, JC Latham, but Alt was the better overall prospect and this was the right pick for the Chargers.
