Jo Koy‘s first time hosting the Golden Globes did not resonate well with the celebrities in the room and drew criticism from audiences on social media.
The comedian has been slammed for his unfunny jokes targeting a slew of well-known public figures during Monday night’s ceremony.
Diedre Hall Bashed Jo Koy For His Less-Than-Funny Golden Globes Jokes
Shortly after Koy wrapped up his hosting gig, actress Deidre Hall promptly took to social media to disclose her disapproval of the jokes he made during the 81st Golden Globes Awards.
The actress, known for her portrayal of Dr. Marlena Evans on “Days of Our Lives,” shared her thoughts, writing, “The Globes Globes host, Jo Koy, is a complete embarrassment to himself and the Academy. Skip it.”
The sentiment seemed to ring true as fans joined in agreement, expressing their thoughts in the comments section of the Facebook post. While one person penned, “Completely agree. The worst host ever,” a second aired, “Agreed, very unprofessional and total embarrassment,” and a third reiterated, “He is so inappropriate for this job. I agree 100%.”
“Did you see he was so nervous he had no saliva in his mouth AND he kept saying I wrote some jokes and the writers wrote the others. The whole show sucked. I didn’t know half of the ‘stars’ on and I didn’t see any of the movies,” a fourth fan disclosed. Similarly, a fifth recalled:
“We turn it on for about 5 minutes tried to watch that guy. I didn’t know who he was and my husband even said he’s not funny and the people in the audience aren’t really laughing either and we changed the channel.”

Koy had kicked off the 2024 ceremony with an opening monologue referencing Hollywood’s Ozempic craze and interweaving jokes about films nominated for awards.
The stand-up comedian humorously suggested that “Oppenheimer” needed to be “another hour” and characterized “Barbie” as a movie about “a plastic doll with big b—es.”
While the remark garnered unamused stares from Margot Robbie and the film’s director, Greta Gerwig, the biggest blunder of the night came when Koy realized that the audience was not on his side. In an attempt to lighten the mood, he alluded to singer Taylor Swift’s well-publicized displays of support for her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, saying:
“As you know, we came on after a football double header. The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL. On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.”
Even though Koy immediately issued an apology to the “Bad Blood” hitmaker who reacted to the quip by sipping her drink, Swifties did not hesitate to slam him, with one pointing out on X, “That landed with a giant thud and a death glare from Swift. Not Jo Koy’s best moment.”
“The joke wasn’t funny, and I’m sure that’s what she’s reacting to, but the way I’m seeing Swifties respond to this is ridiculous. They’re acting as if he personally insulted her when he didn’t. It’s a worn-out joke about over-saturation. It was a dig at the NFL, not her,” a second user wrote.

In light of the backlash against him, The Blast noted that Koy addressed Swift’s icy reflection after he made the joke about her and her footballer beau. Speaking on the subject, the University of Nevada dropout stated:
“Aww, man, it was cute. I was just saying it was cute. I was just saying it’s less cutaways, that’s all.”
Before the drama, Swift herself touched on the NFL’s laser-focused coverage whenever she shows up at a football game to support her man. As she said:
“I don’t know how they know what suite I’m in. There’s a camera, like, a half-mile away, and you don’t know when the camera is putting you in the broadcast, so I don’t know if I’m being shown 17 times or once.”
Doubling down on the reason for her presence, which is to “support Travis,” the “You Belong With Me” singer-songwriter emphasized, “I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and possibly pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”
