Lakeshore Records is set to release The Tiger’s Apprentice—Music from the Paramount+ Original Movie digitally on February 23. Jablonsky’s score captures the spirit of the thrilling animated adventure with a soaring full orchestra, pulsing synths, vocalizations, and a variety of Chinese instruments. Based on the popular children’s book series, the film features a star-studded voice cast and is currently streaming on Paramount+.
“Tom’s theme was the first piece I composed for the film. I myself am an Asian-American that grew up in California so I can very much relate to Tom. He has deep Asian roots but at the same time he’s a California kid who goes to school and loves skateboarding. I wanted his theme to represent all of these things; one way I tried to achieve this was to use literal recordings of skateboard sounds as percussion. There’s a great rhythm to skateboards rolling over sidewalks. I then mixed those sounds with traditional Chinese instruments, both percussive and wind, as well as a full orchestra. I wanted to create something that feels modern and cinematic but also feels uniquely Tom,” said Jablonsky.
“My main goal with this film was to find the right balance between the deep cultural history represented by the characters and the modern approach the film takes to telling their story. I hope the resulting mix of orchestra, synthesizers, percussion, Chinese instruments and vocals matches what the film is trying to say.” He adds, “I played most of the synth parts on this score but I was fortunate to record LA’s finest musicians; full orchestra, percussion, vocals, plus a variety of Chinese instruments including Dizi and Erhu. This tremendously talented group really brought the score to life.”
