LSU vs. Alabama live score, updates, highlights from 2023 college football rivalry game

For Alabama, every game since the program’s Week 2 loss to Texas has been a must-win. The Crimson Tide survived tests against Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Tennessee. Their biggest challenge standing in the way of a trip to the SEC title game might be LSU.

The Tigers handed Nick Saban his second loss of the season a year ago, ending Alabama’s playoff hopes in Baton Rouge, La., in an overtime thriller. The victory gave Brian Kelly his signature win at LSU, and another win on Saturday would make Kelly only the third coach to defeat Saban in back-to-back seasons since his tenure at Alabama began in 2007.

LSU’s defense has been a trouble area all season, but more often than not, an explosive Tigers offense has been able to make up for it. Jayden Daniels has solidified himself as one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the nation, and Malik Nabers has developed into one of the SEC’s premier receivers.

This could be a classic offense vs. defense battle. Alabama has allowed more than 21 points only once this season, holding down potent Ole Miss and Tennessee offenses. Daniels did just enough to get past the Crimson Tide when Bryce Young was at quarterback, however, so it remains to be seen whether a more unsteady Jalen Milroe has enough in the tank to keep up with LSU.

Can LSU knock Alabama from playoff contention for the second consecutive season? It will all come down to one of college football’s classic rivalries in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

LSU vs. Alabama live updates, results, highlights from Week 10

(All times Eastern)

Final: Alabama 42, LSU 28

10:59 p.m. — A first down by McClellan allows Alabama to quickly run out the clock. A thrilling first half leads to an anticlimactic fourth quarter, but the Tide get their revenge after a tough loss to LSU last season and keep their playoff hopes very much alive.

10:55 p.m. — Nabers with a bad drop on fourth down to give the ball back to Alabama. This one is effectively over at this point.

10:54 p.m. — Nussmeier throws downfield to nobody on 3rd & 8… It’ll be 4th & 8 with LSU’s hopes on the line.

10:52 p.m. — Nabers gives LSU some hope with a 28-yard gain. He has 171 yards on the night.

10:51 p.m. — Will Reichard misses his second field goal of the night, so LSU is lingering with a two-score deficit. Alabama is still in excellent shape with under five minutes remaining.

10:48 p.m. — Alabama is exclusively running the ball and finding success doing so. The Tide are gutting the clock right now.

10:44 p.m. — Jayden Daniels is out for the night with a concussion. It’ll be Garrett Nussmeier the rest of the way. The decision to briefly reinsert Daniels into the game does not look like a great one at this moment.

10:41 p.m. — Milroe gives Alabama a fresh set of downs with a 3rd & 3 pass to Jermaine Burton. Look for the Tide to be slower and more deliberate on this drive with the clock just as meaningful as points right now.

10:36 p.m. — LSU nearly goes for it on 4th & 10, realizing a punt does them no good at this point, but a false start penalty leads to 4th & 15. This time the Tigers do punt it. Alabama is in full control here as LSU’s offense begins to sputter a bit.

10:33 p.m. — Daniels is out of the game again… Nussmeier will enter.

10:29 p.m. — LSU is forced to use a timeout shortly after a false start. The crowd sounds loud, which should surprise no one.

10:27 p.m. — Daniels has returned…

10:26 p.m. — Daniels is able to walk off, but Garrett Nussmeier is in the game. Daniels appears to be getting his jaw examined. There was some speculation about that hit being reviewed for targeting, but that won’t be the case,

10:25 p.m. — Daniels takes a massive hit on the first play of LSU’s drive and draws a roughing the passer penalty. He’s still down.

10:20 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Jase McClellan breaks tackles and rumbles in for the score. Alabama has taken advantage of just about every LSU mistake tonight, and it has the Tide up 42-28 with 13 minutes remaining. The Tigers need a touchdown here and then some more help.

10:18 p.m. — LSU nearly was able to stop Alabama, but a horse collar penalty gifts the Tide a fresh set of downs. It’ll be 1st & goal.

10:16 p.m. INTERCEPTION — Daniels is intercepted on the first play of the fourth quarter! That’s the kind of thing that can be the difference in a game like this, and Alabama is set up with great field position to go up by two scores.

10:06 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Alabama is putting up points like the Alabama of years past. Milroe runs it in for his FOURTH rushing touchdown of the night. He has 142 yards on the ground, but more importantly, the Tide have the lead back.

10:04 p.m. — Alabama is just flying down the field right now, as an 18-yard reception by Bond follows up a big 16-yard run by Roydell Williams. The Crimson Tide quickly have a scoring opportunity.

10:00 p.m. — It’ll be a rare punt for LSU, after a holding penalty set the Tigers back. Alabama has a chance to take the lead back.

9:57 p.m. — LSU converts on 3rd & 1, quieting the Alabama crowd for a bit.

LSU 28, Alabama 28

9:51 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Roydell Williams is in for the score! He rattles off three consecutive runs of at least eight yards and has Alabama all even with LSU at 28.

9:50 p.m. — Alabama continues to dominate on third down. Milroe is up to 125 yards after converting on 3rd & 10. The tide are 9-of-11 on third down tonight.

9:47 p.m. — It’s all about the ground game for Alabama right now. The Tide start their drive with three consecutive runs, including a 10-yard gain by Jam Miller.

LSU 28, Alabama 21

9:43 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Josh Williams takes it in to give LSU the lead! The Tigers’ offense carved up Alabama right before and after halftime. Now it’s up to Milroe to answer after all of that time off.

9:41 p.m. — Daniels nearly gets in for another rushing touchdown… But LSU will instead work from the two-yard line.

9:39 p.m. — A terrific throw from Daniels and perhaps an even better catch by Nabers to enter the red zone. Nabers is up to 136 yards and now has six 100-yard games this season.

9:12 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Daniels hits Kyren Lacy for a 26-yard touchdown! An illegal crackback penalty erased much of another nice run by Daniels, but he gets that yardage right back and then some. It’s all even at 21 with five seconds left in the half.

9:09 p.m. — Why don’t we just let these quarterbacks run around all night? Daniels goes for 40 yards, and just like that, LSU has a chance to score before halftime.

Alabama 21, LSU 14

9:03 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Milroe has run for three touchdowns in the first half! Whether he could compete with LSU’s offense with his arm was a question, but with the Tigers letting him run wild, Milroe is playing like a star. Alabama re-takes the lead.

9:02 p.m. — Milroe badly overthrows a wide open Isaiah Bond, who would’ve walked into the end zone.

9:01 p.m. — Milroe uses his legs to convert a huge 3rd & 11 after a false start nearly derailed the drive.

8:57 p.m. — Another big play for Alabama! This time it’s Milroe hitting Jam Miller for 35 yards to cross well into LSU territory. Milroe is up to 165 passing yards tonight.

LSU 14, Alabama 14

8:52 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Daniels takes it in for his first rushing touchdown of the night! LSU was staring down a potential two-score deficit after the missed goal not long ago, but this is now a tied ballgame.

8:51 p.m. — Nabers comes through with a huge conversion on 3rd & 5, setting up 1st & goal for LSU. He’s been that guy all season long.

8:49 p.m. — LSU is moving the ball excellently to start this drive, and a 23-yard reception by Brian Thomas Jr. already has the Tigers into field goal range.

8:42 p.m. — Milroe takes his second sack of the drive, and how about that. Alabama’s drive starts and ends similarly to LSU’s last drive, with a missed field goal. LSU avoids disaster and gets the Tide off the field.

8:39 p.m. — A short pass turns into a huge gain! What a job by Milroe to get the ball to McClellan, who goes 42 yards down the sideline to transform Alabama’s drive. This has been a game of big plays, even if they’re not intended to be big plays.

8:35 p.m. — That’s not the result LSU wanted. After a Daniels sack halts the Tigers’ drive, Damian Ramos misses a 46-yard field goal attempt. Alabama will have a chance to make this a two-possession game already.

8:33 p.m. — Daniels fires up his connection with Malik Nabers, who goes for 22 yards to take LSU down to Alabama’s 25.

8:31 p.m. — More speed from Daniels, who ignites this LSU drive with a 28-yard run. He has 59 rushing yards on just three attempts.

End of first quarter: Alabama 14, LSU 7

8:26 p.m. — As the first quarter ends, LSU has to figure out a way to hold Alabama’s offense to field goals rather than touchdowns. It’s been a year of field goals for the Tide, but more often than not, that’s been all they’ve needed.

Alabama 14, LSU 7

8:23 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — They made that look easy. Milroe takes it into the end zone himself, and Alabama has quickly turned a 7-0 deficit into a 14-7 lead.

8:21 p.m. — Milroe is doing the job well so far, this time hitting Isaiah Bond for 21 yards to take Alabama into the red zone.

8:19 p.m. — Jase McClellan gets the first down for Alabama and takes the Tide over midfield.

8:16 p.m. — Brian Kelly opts to go for it on 4th & 1 just over midfield, but Daniels’ pass is broken up. That’s a big stop for Alabama’s defense, which gives the offense solid field position.

8:11 p.m. — Daniels quickly flashes his mobility, taking off for 24 yards to take LSU up to midfield.

LSU 7, ALABAMA 7

8:05 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Milroe keeps using his legs, picking up 23 yards down the left sideline and racing in for the game-tying touchdown. The game is tied with 7:14 left in the quarter.

8:03 p.m. — Milroe finds Kendrick Law on a quick pass, and Law does the rest, racing up to the right sideline and picking up 16 yards. The Crimson Tide follow that up with a rush of four by Jamarion Miller and a scramble for 11 by Milroe to pick up 11 and a first down.

LSU 7, ALABAMA 0

7:57 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Nabers finds himself all alone behind the defense, and Daniels finds his top weapon, dropping a 46-yard pass into his hands for the touchdown. LSU takes the first lead of the day.

— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) November 5, 2023

7:56 p.m. — Daniels tries to connect with Malik Nabers, but the play is broken up by Malachi Moore. But a huge penalty on Dallas Turner gives the Tigers 15 yards to move up to the LSU 42.

7:55 p.m. — Jayden Daniels shows off his legs to start the drive, rushing for seven yards to start the drive. Then Logan Diggs picks up five on the following play to get an LSU first down.

7:53 p.m. — Milroe is sacked for a loss of nine by Harold Perkins Jr. on third-down, and Alabama has to punt the ball away. He just waited too long in the pocket, and pressure collapsed on him. LSU gets the ball at its own 15 on the punt to start the drive.

7:49 p.m. — Jase McClellan picks up four yards, but Milreo is rushed on his second-down throw to Bradyn Swinson and it falls incomplete. LSU uses a timeout with 13:17 left in the first.

7:48 p.m. — Following a rush for four and an incompletion, Jalen Milroe finds CJ Dippre on a short pass up the middle. Dippre takes it up for 11 yards and a first.

7:47 p.m. — Alabama will start the game at its own 25.

7:35 p.m. — It’s about 66 degrees and clear in Tuscaloosa tonight, so the conditions are just about perfect for football

7:27 p.m. — This is a legacy game for Jayden Daniels, who could leave Baton Rouge at the end of the season with two wins over Alabama. The Heisman Trophy could also be very much in play with a strong showing tonight.

7:18 p.m. — Other playoff contenders have held their own today, but the path is pretty straightforward for Alabama: get to the SEC title game, win it, and get in. Because the four-team playoff is still in place, the other side of the coin is that a loss to LSU effectively ends the Tide’s hopes.

6:45 p.m. — Offense is the name of the game for LSU, but keep an eye on OLB Harold Perkins. He has a tackle for loss in each of his last six games for the Tigers.

6:20 p.m. — Thanks to some conveniently timed bye weeks, former Alabama stars Patrick Surtain II and Jahmyr Gibbs will be in the building for tonight’s rivalry game.

Former Alabama RB and CB Jahmyr Gibbs and Patrick Surtain II as well as Nick Saban will join College GameDay this morning.

— Sidelines – Bama (@SSN_Alabama) November 4, 2023

6:15 p.m. — A win for LSU tonight would give the Tigers three wins over Alabama in the last five years and two in Tuscaloosa. That’s easier said than done, of course. Only two coaches (Les Miles, Hugh Freeze) have beaten Nick Saban in back-to-back years since he arrived at Alabama.
