Manchester City will try to return to the top of the Premier League for the first time since November when they host relegation-threatened Everton.
Monday’s come-from-behind 3-1 victory at Brentford, where Phil Foden scored a fabulous hat-trick, moved Pep Guardiola’s champions to within two points of Liverpool after the leaders lost by the same scoreline to title rivals Arsenal.
Luton Town’s impressive recent form has contributed to Everton dropping back into the relegation zone. Sean Dyche’s men are third bottom, a point behind the Hatters having played a game more.

5th minute: An interesting setup from City so far, with Stones and Akanji each tucking into midfield from full-back. It just led to a fairly clunky bit of build-up play.
3rd minute: Alvarez booms an inswinging in under the crossbar but Pickford is equal to the task palming clear. Nunes’ follow-up cross is overhit, beyond Haaland.
2nd minute: Foden, fresh from his hat-trick in midweek, glides inside looking to cause trouble but his pass is blocked. Now here’s the twinkle-toed Doku on the other flank and Tarkowski clears his low cross behind for the game’s first corner.
1st minute: Off we go. Everton won the toss before kickoff and turned the teams around. It means that instead of kicking to the North Stand during the second half, City will be attacking the South Stand. This doesn’t happen very often. It did when they won the Premier League on the final day of the season in 2021/22.
3 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams, walking out at a packed Etihad. We’re almost ready to go. Both sets of fans booing the Premier League anthem. Lovely.
15 mins before kickoff: Julian Alvarez is making his 23rd start out of 23 Premier League games this season. The young Argentina forward is a phenomenal talent and injuries to Haaland and De Bruyne have played a part in this run, given he played as an attacking midfielder for the bulk of the Belgian’s absence. But now, with both of those star men back in the fold and Phil Foden thriving in central areas, the fact Guardiola is still finding a place for Alvarez speaks volumes.
40 mins before kickoff: Victory today would see City return to the top of the Premier League for the first time since November, if only for a few hours until Liverpool host Burnley later in the afternoon. You also have to go back to November to find Erling Haaland’s most recent Premier League goal (against Liverpool, incidentally). The Norway superstar has spent the majority of the interim period on the sidelines with a foot injury but drew a blank on his return to the starting XI at Brentford in midweek. Haaland scored in both fixtures against Everton last season. It feels like he’s due.

55 mins before kickoff: There was an awful lot to like about Everton’s performance in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham and Sean Dyche – who will serve a touchline ban today for collecting three yellow cards – has gone with an unchanged XI.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Team news will be with us shortly. There’s speculation that Kevin De Bruyne isn’t in the City XI. Guardiola will obviously have one eye on Tuesday’s trip to Copenhagen in the Champions League and it will be interesting to see how he shuffles his pack.
1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: In his programme notes, Pep Guardiola lavished praise upon his opposite number Sean Dyche. “Sean is someone I respect so it will be a pleasure to face him again today.” The rivalry is preposterously one-sided on paper, though. Since moving to City, Guardiola has faced Dyche 17 times across his spells with Burnley and Everton, winning 16 and drawing one.

Guardiola appeared to have a fully-fit squad to choose from, with Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones all returning to action over recent weeks, although there was no Mateo Kovacic in the matchday squad.
De Bruyne reverts to the bench, no doubt with an eye on Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Copenhagen, which Stones returns to the first XI alongside Manuel Akanji, Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku.
