Dark Horse Comics is giving new readers the perfect opportunity to get to know Hellboy on Free Comic Book Day this May. An all-new story from Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is designed to help new fans get acquainted with the half-demonic paranormal investigator, and Screen Rant is proud to reveal an exclusive first look of the comic.

The FCBD Gold issue from Dark Horse will feature the new Hellboy story “The Fortune Teller,” as well as a Stranger Things story titled “Deliver Me from Evil.” “The Fortune Teller” centers around a murder investigation that leads to a mysterious Romanian fortune teller. This fortune teller is way too interested in Hellboy’s past and future, providing an opportunity for readers unfamiliar with his lore to learn all about him. Check out the cover featuring new artwork by Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart.

“The Fortune Teller” is written by Mike Mignola, drawn by Márk László, colored by Dave Stewart and lettered by Clem Robins.

The FCBD Gold issue featuring “The Fortune Teller” will be available on Saturday, May 4.

Hellboy Creator Wants to Bring in New Fans

Hellboy has been a fixture of the comics world for more than 30 years, debuting in 1993. In addition to starring in three live-action films (with another on the way), Hellboy has also featured in countless miniseries, standalone issues and spinoffs. For Mignola, this FCBD issue was a perfect opportunity to bring in people who may be curious about Hellboy, but have trouble knowing where to start.

“For something like this I like to do a story aimed at a new reader—someone who may have heard of Hellboy but has never actually read it,” Mignola said in an exclusive quote to Screen Rant. “So a story basically ABOUT Hellboy seemed like a good idea—And a chance to work with the great Mark Laszlo again, to see him draw his version of various scenes I’ve drawn in the past—That made the whole thing a real joy.”

There’s no better way for new fans to jump into the world of Big Red than with a story by this creative team. Each member is well established in crafting tales of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. (that’s the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, for the uninitiated). In addition to Mignola, who created the character, Márk László provided art for the story Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Time is a River; Dave Stewart has provided colors for Hellboy stories since the 1990s, beginning with A Christmas Underground in 1997 and most recently working on Giant Robot Hellboy; Clem Robins has lettered Hellboy comics dating back to 2005’s Hellboy: The Island, most recently working on Giant Robot Hellboy.

Free Comic Book Day Brings Hellboy And Stranger Things Together

In addition to “The Fortune Teller,” the Dark Horse Comics FCBD Gold issue will feature the Stranger Things story “Deliver Me from Evil.” This story is written by Derek Fridolfs, illustrated and colored by Jonathan Case and lettered by Nate Piekos. Centering around Argyle and Jonathan swapping fantastical and scary stories as they make their last pizza delivery of the night, it’s a great way for Stranger Things fans to tide themselves over as they wait for the final season to premiere on Netflix.

The lore of Hellboy is very intricate. His real name is Anung Un Rama, and he was born in 1574 to a human woman and a demon. His work with B.P.R.D. has brought him all around the world, as well as to Hell and back more than once. Hellboy is a great blend of fantasy, horror, sci-fi and action but, as with any comics property, it can be a bit daunting to know where to start. Now, fans wanting to dip their toes into the waters of Hellboy’s world will have a great opportunity this Free Comic Book Day thanks to Dark Horse Comics.

The Dark Horse Comics Free Comic Book Day Gold issue will be available on May 4.
