Mikhail Sergachev injury update: Lightning defenseman stretchered off after gruesome leg injury vs. Rangers

The Lightning are likely to be without one of their best defenders, Mikhail Sergachev, for an extended period of time — again.

In his first game back after missing the past six weeks because of a lower-body injury, Sergachev appeared to suffer a gruesome leg injury Wednesday evening in the Lightning’s clash with the Rangers. The Rangers eventually won 3-1, but that was the least of Tampa’s concerns.

One of the leading point-scorers among defensemen in 2022-23, Sergachev was stretchered off the ice in obvious pain.

Mikhail Sergachev injury update

The 25-year-old attempted to send New York’s Alexis Lafreniere into the boards with a check. As Sergachev made contact with the Rangers forward, he appeared to get his left skate caught in the ice. Lafreniere’s skate then landed on Sergachev’s as he dropped toward the ice, prompting additional hyperextension.

Here’s a clip of the injury. Viewer discretion is advised.

Sergachev was in audible pain as Tampa Bay’s medical personnel tended to his wounds. He was eventually taken off the ice via stretcher. As Sergachev left the ice, he covered his face with his jersey. He eventually gave the Rangers faithful a thumbs up as he was taken to the dressing room.
