Like its predecessor, True Detective season 4 boasts a talented cast that helps it carry on its legacy as one of the best crime anthology shows on TV. The series has been one of HBO Max’s most successful originals with one of the highest viewership on the network thanks to its compelling plotlines, character arcs, and unique narrative style. Harkening back to the original smash-hit season, True Detective: Night Country’s characters are tasked with investigating supernatural mysteries and must utilize unconventional methods to uncover the truth.

Titled Night Country, the series boasts a strong cast led by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, whose characters are forced to confront their pasts through the investigation. Despite having strong predecessors to compare to, True Detective season 4 successfully manages to both recall the season 1, and arguably improve upon it. This is no doubt thanks to the stellar cast that brings the enthralling season 4 story to life.

Jodie Foster as Liz Danvers

Jodie Foster, who received an Academy Award for playing Detective Clarice Starling in The Silence of The Lambs, could not have been better suited to lead the series as Liz Danvers. Liz is heralded with the task of investigating the sudden disappearance of eight men from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station, which soon spirals into a macabre and potentially supernatural mystery.

Foster had a breakthrough with her role as Iris Steensma in Taxi Driver, for which she received her first Academy Award nomination. Although she didn’t win that time, Foster eventually went on to get 2 Academy Awards for her performance as Sarah Tobias in The Accused and Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs. She also appeared as the lead in Panic Room (playing Meg Altman), Flightplan (Kyle Pratt), and The Mauritanian (Nancy Hollander) – which earned her a Golden Globe.

Kali Reis as Evangeline Navarro

Evangeline Navarro works alongside Liz Danvers on the scientist mystery, while also trying to crack a years-old cold case. Portrayed by professional boxer and actress Kali Reis, she made her acting debut in Catch the Fair One as Kaylee, where she is also credited as the writer. The plot follows the story of a former boxer on a quest to find her missing sister. Reis has also starred in Black Flies opposite Sean Penn and appears in Wind River: The Next Chapter alongside Gil Birmingham and Scott Eastwood.

John Hawkes as Hank Prior

Hank Prior, a police officer with an apparent grudge against Danvers, is portrayed by John Hawkes. Hawkes is best known for his role as “Teardrop” Dolly in the coming-of-age drama Winter’s Bone, for which he received an Academy Award nomination. His other brilliant performances include Mark O’Brien in The Sessions, Robert Lantham in Lincoln, Charlie Hayes in Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Freddie Spearman in American Gangster. His TV credits are just as impressive as he starred as Sol Star in Deadwood, Viggo in Too Old to Die Young, and Klaw in Marvel’s Wastelanders: Doom.

Christopher Eccleston as Ted Corsaro

Sharing a long history with Liz Danvers, Ted Corsaro is a politically inclined “animal” and the regional Chief of Police. The character is played by BAFTA nominee Christopher Eccleston, best known for his role as the ninth Doctor in Doctor Who. He was also cast as the iconic comic villain Malekith in Thor: The Dark World, portraying John Lennon in Lennon Naked, and David Stephen in Shallow Grave. Apart from an extensive career in film, he has also appeared in television, notably as Matt Jamison in another HBO original The Leftovers, and appears in the film Young Woman and the Sea as Jabez Wolffe.

Fiona Shaw as Rose Aguineau

With a mysterious past and a possible connection to a character from season 1 survivalist Rose Aguineau is portrayed by Fiona Shaw, who is no stranger to starring in suspense thrillers. Shaw starred as Carolyn Martens – head of the Russian Section of MI6 in the series Killing Eve for which she received a BAFTA award. She is best known for her portrayal of the character Aunt Petunia in the Harry Potter film series. She has also been credited as Miss Harrison in Enola Holmes and joined the Andor cast as Maarva Andor.

Finn Bennett as Peter Prior

Newcomer Finn Bennett stars as Peter Prior – Danvers’ protégé and enthusiastic confidante. This is Bennett’s first major onscreen appearance since his recurring role as Marcellus in the British-Italian historical drama series Domina. Bennett has also appeared in the Channel 4 miniseries Kiri alongside Sarah Lancashire as Si Warner and in the coming-of-age TV movie Cider with Rosie as Jack alongside Timothy Spall and Samantha Morton.

Anna Lambe as Kayla Malee

Anna Lambe stars as Kayla Malee, a young nurse who is married to Pete Prior. The couple’s relationship comes under severe strain as a result of Pete’s dedication to the missing scientists case. Lambe is best known for her debut role as Spring in the sports drama The Grizzlies, for which she received a Canadian Screen Award nomination. She has also appeared in the coming-of-age series Trickster as Sarah and Dawn in Dusk & Dawn (where she also serves as associate producer).

True Detective Season 4 Supporting Cast & Characters

Aka Niviâna as Julia – Newcommer Aka Niviâna debuts in True Detective as Julia – Navarro’s sister battling demons from her past and within her. This is Niviâna’s first acting credit. She previously served as a runner for the critically acclaimed series Borgen – a political drama about a prime minister’s rise to power, starring Sidse Babbett Knudsen in the lead.

Klaus Tange as Otis Heiss – Introduced in True Detective: Night Country episode 4, Otis Heiss immediately arouses suspicion. He is played by Danish actor Klaus Tange, who is best known for a recurring role in Netflix sci-fi series Tribes of Europa.

Nivi Pedersen as Annie Kowtuk – Despite being murdered years before the disappearance of the scientists, activist Annie K is somehow connected to the main True Detective season 4 mystery. She is played by Nivi Pedersen, who starred as Emmy Rasmussen in Borgen.

Owen McDonnell as Raymond Clark – A former romantic partner of Annie K, Raymond Clark instantly arouses suspicion after the disappearance of his fellow scientists and his association with the mysterious True Detective spiral. The Irish researcher is played by Owen McDonnell, who featured in Killing Eve as Niko Polastri.

Isabella Star LaBlanc as Leah – Isabella Star LaBlanc portrays Danvers’ stepdaughter Leah, who is struggling to find her voice and identity. LaBlanc has previously starred in a recurring role in the drama series Long Slow Exhale as Elfrina. She was also an extra on the series In An Instant.

Joel D. Montgrand as Eddie Qavvik – Joel D. Montgrand plays Eddie Qavvik, a local musher with deep connections and Navarro’s love interest in True Detective season 4. Montgrand is best known for his role as Hakoda in Avatar: The Last Airbender. He also appeared in the award-winning film Beans as Kania’tariio.
