Pierce Brosnan may have just found his James Bond replacement with Black Bag, a whole decade after his last attempt to replace Bond ended in a box office disaster. Brosnan recently joined the cast of Black Bag, directed by Steven Soderbergh and due to begin production in May. After years of failing to secure a suitable replacement for the James Bond series, including a notable $34.8 million flop, this could be the big break Brosnan has been looking for.

Soderbergh’s new project is a spy movie set in the United Kingdom. As well as Brosnan, other members of the cast include Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, and fellow James Bond alumnus, Naomie Harris. Given Soderbergh’s popularity, as well as the film’s familiar genre, Black Bag could finally give Brosnan the James Bond follow-up he needs.

Black Bag Could Give Pierce Brosnan A Great Spy Role, 22 Years After James Bond

Pierce Brosnan has proven himself as a spy movie star. Across Pierce Brosnan’s four James Bond movies that were released between 1995 and 2002, he displayed charm, presence, and grit. He proved that not only could he compete with the very best Bond actors, but also that he was a bankable action star. Brosnan and spy films go hand-in-hand, so it only makes sense that Soderbergh turned to the actor when it came to casting his new spy thriller. If Brosnan is given a decent character to work with, and if he’s allowed to show off his natural charisma, it could be a match made in heaven.

The spy genre is a good fit for the filmmaker, who, at one point, was in talks with 007 producer, Barbara Broccoli, to direct a

film of his own.

After all, Soderbergh himself is no stranger to making a hit. His Ocean’s trilogy grossed over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, while other films of his, such as Erin Brockovich and Magic Mike, have also had mainstream appeal. For his crime drama, Traffic, Soderbergh won an Academy Award for Best Director. The spy genre is a good fit for the filmmaker, who, at one point, was in talks with 007 producer Barbara Broccoli to direct a James Bond film of his own. However, nothing ever materialized. With Black Bag and Brosnan’s involvement, it could now become a reality.

The November Man Failed At Being Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond Replacement

Black Bag isn’t Brosnan’s first return to the spy genre since leaving the Bond franchise. In 2014, he played the lead in the gritty spy action thriller, The November Man, alongside Luke Bracey and Quantum of Solace’s Olga Kurylenko. Directed by Roger Donaldson, the film performed poorly at the box office, only managing to gross a worldwide total of $34.8 million. Additionally, it garnered broadly negative reviews from critics and currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 35%. While there were talks of a sequel to The November Man, it ultimately never came to fruition.

The November Man
is available to stream on Starz.

Twenty-two years after his last James Bond film, Brosnan may have finally found a fitting replacement. In recent years, Brosnan has made a name for himself by being the best aspect of otherwise bad movies, such as the DCEU’s Black Adam and 2021’s Cinderella. Even in the unlikely event that Soderbergh’s Black Bag turns out to be a failure, there’s still a good chance it could end up working out well for Brosnan.
