The Rangers and Orioles have each waited a long time to reach the postseason again. The last time either one of them made it into the playoffs was 2016, and neither made it as far as the ALCS.
At least one of them will be moving on to play for a pennant in 2023. The Rangers knocked out the Rays in the wild-card round, setting up a match against another AL East team in the Orioles, who finished the regular season with 101 wins, the most of any American League team.
Both these teams are loaded with young talent. Evan Carter and Josh Jung played major roles in helping Texas beat the Rays, while the Orioles have been carried all season by the dynamic duo of Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson.

While it’s the young bats of the Orioles that get the headlines, it’s often been Baltimore’s pitching that has been the backbone of the team. Kyle Bradish has been a sleeper Cy Young contender, while Kyle Gibson and Grayson Rodriguez has been standout hurlers in the second half. Even without the injured Felix Bautista, the bullpen, led by Yennier Cano and Danny Coulombe.
They’ll need all the pitching they can get against Texas, which boasts the explosive lineup trio of Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia. The Rangers were tied for the third-highest OPS+ in baseball at 113 and were third in home runs with 233.
