Snapchat+ subscribers can now send custom generative AI images

Snapchat has launched generative AI images for Snapchat+ subscribers, along with a series of other updates. (Snapchat+, which has over 7 million users, costs $3.99 per month.)

The new feature invites subscribers to write a short prompt to create an image to share. It also supplies its own prompts, like “a planet made out of cheese” and “a cave with emeralds growing on the walls.”

This isn’t the social media platform’s first foray into AI. It previously launched its AI selfie generator, “Dreams,” and the controversial chatbot, “My AI.” Dreams turns selfies into imaginative versions of the user — the options include a mermaid and an elf on horseback. The “My AI” chatbot responds to users conversationally. In addition to being able to create images, subscribers have the ability to include friends in their Dream selfies with the update. That means multiple mermaids and elves!

Subscribers also now have access to an “AI powered extend tool” that can fill out the background of a zoomed-in photo. The updates confirm Snapchat’s continued commitment to incorporating AI.

According to Snapchat’s announcement, the features are rolling out, but regional availability may vary.
