After years of speculation and hopes for another sequel, Disney announced in November 2022 that a third film was in the works, with a script being written by Aadrita Mukerji and original producer Debra Martin involved. In an interview with V Magazine, Hathaway expressed optimism and confidence in the development of The Princess Diaries 3. Her comments come after previously sharing doubts about whether the sequel would happen because of several challenges, particularly due to how many years it has been since the first movie was released and how much older both she and her character Mia are now. In order to be a proper sequel, Hathaway needs to return as Mia, and Andrews needs to return as her royal grandmother, Clarisse Renaldi. The plot will depend on which actors are willing and able to return, but if both Hathaway and Andrews are back, it could help the threequel be a generational story, perhaps with Mia now preparing her daughter to become Genovia’s heir to the throne. After seeing Clarisse preparing Mia for two movies, it would be fascinating to see the two of them working together to help Mia’s daughter.

She can continue to change Genovia for the better and cement her legacy. Along with Clarisse, she can be supported by familiar faces like Joe (Héctor Elizondo) and her good friend Lilly Moscovitz (Heather Matarazzo).
Mia’s romantic status also needs to be addressed. She may still be with Nicholas Deveraux (Chris Pine), and if not, she could rekindle her relationship with Michael Moscovitz (Robert Schwartzman), who wasn’t in the sequel, because the actor’s band was on tour.
