Tottenham vs Newcastle live score, updates, highlights, result from Premier League Spurs hit four

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, two of the challengers for the Champions League places, lock horns in what should be a gripping Premier League matchup on Sunday.

Both these sides have designs on finishing in the top four this season and, perhaps, laying down a title challenge alongside the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa. This match could well give some insight as to which team is best placed to do so.

After a superb first three months under new boss Ange Postecoglou, Spurs’ season has come off the rails of late. They fought to a creditable 3-3 draw away to champions Man City, but they have lost four times in a winless run stretching back to October 27.

Newcastle have also enjoyed some fine results despite a recent injury crisis, beating Chelsea 4-1 and Manchester United 1-0 at home, but their previous two away league games saw them lose 2-0 to Bournemouth and 3-0 to struggling Everton. It is difficult to predict what sort of performance they will produce here in North London.

The Sporting News will be following the Tottenham vs Newcastle match live, providing score updates, commentary, and highlights as they happen.

Tottenham vs Newcastle live updates, highlights, and commentary

85 mins: GOAL! Son makes no mistake! Dubravka guesses right but the shot is drilled right into the bottom corner.

84 mins: TOTTENHAM PENALTY! Son is sent racing through on goal, and after a heavy first touch, he gets to the ball ahead of the onrushing Dubravka and the keeper brings him down. No need for a long check there — that was a clear foul.

82 mins: This is getting a bit fractious now. Trippier is booked for clattering into Kulusevski near the touchline. He’ll now be suspended for Newcastle’s next league game against Fulham.

79 mins: What is Romero doing? Callum Wilson is on the floor, and as he tries to get up and regain the ball, the Spurs defender steams in with a poor challenge, catching the striker on his ankle. A VAR check decides a yellow card is fair. I think Romero is lucky.

75 mins: Spurs are playing with real flair now. Kulusevski and Bissouma have danced away from tackles in their own half, and Porro brings a good save from Dubravka after nutmegging Miley.

68 mins: Joelinton is booked for a pretty poor shove on Porro. He wasn’t going to win the header and decided to take his frustrations out on the Spurs full-back.

63 mins: Spurs are rampant and it should be 4-0! Kulusevski plays in Johnson, whose cross-come-shot from the right strikes the angle of post and crossbar and comes back out rather than in. Moments later, Son ghosts in at the far post and volleys across goal and wide of the target.

60 mins: GOAL! Richarlison strikes again and this game could now be over. Pedro Porro looks up, sees Richarlison’s run, and picks him out with an inch-perfect diagonal pass. The ball is so good that Richarlison’s errant first touch doesn’t matter, as he still has time to adjust and slot a left-footed finish beneath Martin Dubravka.

58 mins: This has been the least effective performance from youngster Lewis Miley in this breakout month of his career, but he’s involved at last, hanging up a teasing cross towards Isak. Spurs break from the corner and Jamaal Lascelles takes a booking for hauling down Son.

54 mins: Spurs have slowed the pace down a little in this half. It’s giving Newcastle more time on the ball, although they’ve not yet done much with it.

49 mins: Gordon wins a free-kick in a decent position from a daft Romero challenge. Newcastle have looked brighter in these early minutes of the second half. Can they get a goal to show for it? Not this time — Yves Bissouma glances Trippier’s delivery away.

Second half

Here we go, then. Can Newcastle find a way back into this game?

Halftime: Tottenham 2-0 Newcastle

Spurs are cruising to an important Premier League victory here. Newcastle have been second best across the pitch, and they really need some impetus from somewhere.

45 + 3 mins: A nice passing move ends with Richarlison stabbing a difficult effort over the crossbar. That’s the last act of a terrific half for Spurs.

45 mins: We’re into three minutes of added time at the end of the half.

44 mins: “What did Richarlison do??” asks Gary Neville on a Sky Sports broadcast, and I have to agree — that was odd. Son leads another break, plays in Dejan Kulusevski, and as his shot deflects across the six-yard box, Richarlison seems to attempt a strange improvised header, only to miss the ball completely.

41 mins: Johnson fizzes a shot just wide after Sarr wins the ball off Joelinton on the edge of the box. Newcastle have been second best with and without the ball today, and there’s a risk this game could be out of sight before halftime if they keep giving up these chances.

38 mins: GOAL! Tottenham get their second! Minutes after that Almiron chance went begging, Newcastle are 2-0 down. Trippier makes a mess of a header and Son collects the loose ball. He faces up the England defender inside the area, escapes his challenge and cuts the ball back for a Richarlison tap-in.

34 mins: Almiron should do better! Spurs give up the ball in their own half and Newcastle break forward. Gordon slides it through to Almiron inside the area, but his low left-foot shot is too close to Guglielmo Vicario, and it’s a fairly simple save.

30 mins: SARR! It could’ve been 2-0! Brennan Johnson has five players to aim at in the Newcastle box. He fizzes a cross towards Pape Sarr, who charged his way towards the penalty spot from the halfway line, but his connection isn’t clean and the shot slices wide.

26 mins: GOAL! Tottenham take a deserved lead! The ball is worked across the field to Son, who has too much space to take on Trippier. He gets to the byline and drills in a low cross, which is turned into the net by Destiny Udogie inside the six-yard box.

21 mins: At this point in the game, Spurs have made over 40 passes in the attacking third, while Newcastle have made four. Yet it’s the visitors who should be leading through that Isak chance.

17 mins: Off the line from Kieran Trippier! Cristian Romero’s header from a corner is looping towards the right-hand post, but Trippier hoofs the ball clear. That looked to be going in.

15 mins: Son leads a Spurs break but dithers on the ball as he squares up to Fabian Schar, allowing Miguel Almiron to get back and tackle. Son then concedes a free-kick for putting an arm across the winger’s neck as he tries to win the ball back.

9 mins: ISAK! WHAT A CHANCE! Newcastle beat the Spurs press and suddenly Anthony Gordon is running clear down the left. As he enters the box, it’s a three-on-two in the visitors favour, but his cut-back takes a nick off Ben Davies and Alexander Isak can’t turn the ball goalwards from point-blank range.

7 mins: GUIMARAES! Newcastle’s first attack sees the ball come back to the midfielder on the edge of the box. He deliberately cuts across the ball with his attempt, but it swerves just over the bar. It was nice technique, but he should really have hit the target.

6 mins: Son has started on the left of the Spurs attack, with Richarlison as the No. 9. It’s working well early on: their latest combination led to a Richarlison shot that deflected over the bar.

3 mins: It won’t surprise anyone that this has been a competitive and high-tempo start. Spurs are having the early possession but there’ve been no openings yet.

Kickoff

We’re underway in North London. Newcastle get us going in their change strip of dark blue and black.

30 mins prior to kickoff: Ange Postecoglou is happy to have players available to rotate into his side given Spurs’ injury list and the hectic December schedule.

“It’s good to have them back, for sure,” he told Sky Sports. “We needed to change it up anyway as it’s been a pretty hectic week.

“Sonny’s good. We’re looking forward to the game.”

Team news
