World Series 2023 live score: Rangers vs. Diamondbacks updates, highlights, results from Game 5

The Rangers are on the brink of baseball immortality.

Big-money signings Corey Seager and Marcus Semien proved they are worth their weight in gold during Game 4 of the World Series, sending moonshots into the Arizona night sky to propel Texas to a victory. The win brought Texas on the cusp of MLB’s promised land — frolicking underneath the steady pour of confetti, Commissioner’s Trophy firmly in grasp.

The middle-infield pairing has had about as varied an experience as one can imagine during the postseason. Seager has been the star, spraying rockets all across the fertile meadow. He has four hits in the World Series, three of them homers.

Semien’s road to November has been littered with potholes. The slick-handed second baseman is hitting just .211 in the playoffs, a far cry from the more efficient .276/.348/.478 slash line he sported during the regular season.

Despite their contrasting displays over the course of October, Seager and Semien earned their paychecks on Tuesday. If they can do so again, glory awaits them. And that will represent $500 million well spent to the Rangers’ front office brass.

World Series results, highlights from Rangers vs. Diamondbacks Game 5

(All times Eastern)

10:32 p.m.: Ginkel gets out of it! He cracks Garver’s bat with a buzzsaw of a fastball, leading to the ground out. The D-Backs still have a chance!

10:30 p.m.: Ginkel sets Carter down on strikes, battling back from 2-0 down to put the gifted rookie away. Ginkel faces Garver as he searches for an escape route to the jam he got himself into.

10:27 p.m.: Excellent plate discipline by Seager, who watches Ginkel’s curveball drop out of the zone for ball four. The bases are loaded for Carter.

10:24 p.m.: Semien sprays one into right field, adding to Ginkel’s despair after Jankowski got on via walk. Guess who is up with two away? None other than Seager. Uh oh.

10:21 p.m.: Longoria barehands a roller to third before zipping it into first to throw out Taveras. One away.

Eight inning

10:18 p.m.: Walker lines out to center field. The Rangers are six outs away from glory.

10:14 p.m.: 101 on the gun to retire Moreno. That’s the last batter Chapman will face in the frame. Bruce Bochy will opt for the righty Josh Sborz to face Walker.

Got him with the 101mph fastball 🔥

10:12 p.m.: You see the good and the bad of Chapman in the first two batters. Prompts a flyout from Carroll, but then walks Marte on four fastballs. Let’s see if Torey Lovullo sends Marte with one gone in the seventh.

10:10 p.m.: Aroldis Chapman takes the mound for the seventh inning. Interesting choice to replace Eovaldi. The first batter he’ll face is the ebullient Carroll.

10:07 p.m.: Heim flies out into foul ground. The inning is over. But the damage is done. If Arizona wants its season to continue, it’s going to need its offense to find a rhythm.

10:05 p.m.: Kevin Ginkel greeted by Nathaniel Lowe at the plate. He forces Lowe into a weak grounder, catching Carter in a rundown between third and home. That leaves the D-Backs one out away from getting out of the frame.

Rangers 1, Diamondbacks 0

10:00 p.m.: Gallen ends his display in style, whiffing Jung on three pitches to grab the first out of the inning. He’ll receive a hero’s welcome as he departs, with the concourses singing his name as he takes to the dugout.

Gallen’s final line: 6.1 innings pitched, three hits surrendered, one walk and six strikeouts. No matter the result, he can hold his head high.

9:59 p.m.: The levee breaks! Garver slides one back to sender, bringing Seager around to score! Rangers take the lead in the seventh!

The @Rangers are on the board!!!

9:56 p.m.: When it rains, it pours. Carter rips a liner into the alley, sending Seager to third on the double. Time for deliberations on the mound.

9:55 p.m.: Seager hits it where they ain’t, peddling Gallen’s fastball down the third base line to end the no-no. It had to be him, didn’t it.

Who else?

9:51 p.m.: Artist! Eovaldi tickles the corner with a venomous fastball, ending the frame in style. If that’s it for the Rangers ace, he made sure to get his money’s worth.

Eovaldi’s final line: 6.0 innings, four hits surrendered, five strikeouts and five walks on 97 pitches.

9:48 p.m.: Eovaldi turns away with routine chopper, nabbing the first out of the inning. He follows that up with that smoke-covered splitter, sending Longoria back to the dugout with his tail between his legs.

9:46 p.m.: Eovaldi returns to the mound for one more. He’s been about as gutsy as they come through 85 pitches; five innings pitched, three strikeouts, five walks, four hits allowed and, somehow, zero runs conceded. He’ll meet Thomas to start the frame.

9:44 p.m.: Gallen blows Semien away with the fastball at the bottom of the zone. Six innings of no-hit ball. And he’s made it look all so easy thus far.

Zac Gallen.

9:42 p.m.: Semien putting up a good battle against Gallen. Just fouled one off of his shin. Walking a little gingerly, but will return to the plate for the 2-2 pitch.

9:40 p.m.: Jankowski got ahead 3-0 in the count. But all it took was one weakly struck fastball to get Gallen out of the jam; Gurriel snags the second out of the inning.

9:38 p.m.: Another pitch, another out for Gallen. He coaxes a weak grounder from Taveras which falls into the grateful glove of Marte.

Sixth inning

9:35 p.m.: He can’t keep getting away with this…can he? Eovaldi struts off the mound confidently after seeing Gurriel stroke a weak dribbler to Seager for the third out. Arizona just can’t break the seal. We are still scoreless through five.

9:34 p.m.: Eovaldi walks Pham on five pitches. Maddux to the mound again. They’re going to give Eovaldi one more chance, this time against Gurriel. Oh, and the bases are loaded. Risky business here for Texas.

9:32 p.m.: Snakes Alive? Walker spits one into right field, allowing Marte to go first to third. Eovaldi has another pickle to tip toe out of.

9:31 p.m.: Eovaldi paints the black with an inch-perfect strike on Moreno. A big answer after Eovaldi surrenders a one-out walk to Marte in the previous at-bat.

9:27 p.m.: Carroll flies out to left field on the first pitch. What Eovaldi would do for a stress-free inning right now.

9:23 p.m.: Right back to business with the K; Gallen tricks Heim into swinging over the top of a breaking ball, ending the frame. That’s five no-hit innings in the books for the NL Cy Young hopeful.

9:20 p.m.: It was bound to happen at some point: Gallen walks Lowe on five pitches, surrendering his first base runner of the night.

9:18 p.m.: Rangers starting to offer a little resistance to Gallen’s pitching. Garver and Jung rip efforts towards the menacing mound sitting in left field. But Gurriel shows impressive range on both, racing into the warning track to connect with Garver’s attempt before making a sumptuous over the shoulder grab to deny Jung.

Oh my Lourdes

9:10 p.m.: Eovaldi does it again! Sets Perdomo aside with an inch-perfect 3-2 fastball on the black. This game (somehow) remains scoreless through four innings.

We are still scoreless after 4

9:08 p.m.: Rumble, old man, rumble! Longoria shoots a looping effort right along the first base line. It drops in no man’s land, giving Longo an opportunity to round the bases and slide into second.

9:06 p.m.: Strong start to the fourth by Eovaldi, who nabs back-to-back outs via Gurriel flyout and a Thomas ground out to second.

9:00 p.m.: Gallen has Texas’ lineup looking silly. First, coaxes Seager into weak contact en route to a second out. Then, mystifies Carter with the hook, setting him down on strikes on a full count. He’s flawless through four.

8:54 p.m.: Eovaldi gets out of it! Pham grounds out to Seager to end the frame! Impressive effort by Texas’ hurler, who tiptoes himself out of yet another jam.

8:53 p.m.: Eovaldi rips a blistering fastball down the middle, fooling Walker. Two gone and the Rangers ace is nearly out of this one.

8:51 p.m.: Brilliant small ball by Moreno. The youngster lays down his first sacrifice bunt of the year, dropping it perfectly in between first base and home plate to move Carroll and Marte 90 feet. Walker has a chance to put the D-Backs in the driver’s seat.

8:49 p.m.: Marte takes first via walk. Mike Maddux headed to the mound as the Rangers look to stop this thing from unraveling. Two on the pond, none out for Moreno.

8:47 p.m.: Corbin Carroll deposits Eovaldi’s opening pitch of the inning beyond Semien in second. Expect some mayhem on the basepaths now.

8:44 p.m.: First pitch swinging for Jankowski proves unfulfilling; the Rangers right fielder grounds out to end the frame. Nine up, nine down for Gallen.

8:43 p.m.: Alek Thomas slides underneath Leody Taveras’ lofted effort for Out No. 2 of the  inning.

8:41 p.m.: One pitch, one out: Jonah Heim grounds out to second base. Gallen has retired seven straight to start tonight’s game. Not too shabby.

Third inning

8:38 p.m.: Geraldo Perdomo lifts a lazy fly ball into right field, straight into the wickets of Travis Jankowski. Inning over. Arizona has yet to drive in one of its five runners in scoring position today.

8:35 p.m.: Evan Longoria got great wood on a Eovaldi off-speed pitch, ripping it into left field. Unfortunately for him, Evan Carter got a great beat on the ball, sliding on his knees to steal a hit from the legendary third baseman. Two away for Eovaldi and the Rangers.

— Texas Rangers (@Rangers) November 2, 2023

8:33 p.m.: Seager wades into Semien territory to throw out Alek Thomas’s grounder. Gurriel allowed to advance to second.

8:31 p.m.: Lourdes Gurriel opens the second with a single, delicately lifting a grounder into open air. Leadoff runner on for the second straight inning for Arizona.

8:27 p.m.: Gallen got things rolling in the second, getting out of the inning in seven pitches. Struck out Mitch Garver, then prompted Josh Jung and Nathaniel Lowe to ground out to end the frame.

Second inning

8:24 p.m.: Eovaldi wins the battle of wits, coaxing a groundball out into Seager. The Rangers tight-roped out of the first inning without conceding a run.

8:21 p.m.: Eovaldi misses the target once more, sending Walker to first via walk. Phenomenal take by Walker on 2-2 to avoid swinging over the top of Sovaldi’s splitter. Interesting matchup on the horizon between Eovaldi and Tommy Pham, who smoked one of Eovaldi’s fastballs for a dinger in Game 1.

8:19 p.m.: Gabriel Moreno sends a weak dribbler to Seager. Not enough on it to trouble the Rangers shortstop. More importantly, Carroll was unable to depart after being looked off the bag. Christian Walker looking to keep the rally going with two outs.

8:15 p.m.: Corbin Carroll makes things happen! The D-Backs rookie recorded a walk after seeing four straight pitches stray wide of the target. Then, he pounces, bursting out of his lead to take second base with relative ease! He moves 90 feet after Ketel Marte’s weakly grounds out to second base, giving Arizona a chance to open the scoring.

8:11 p.m.: Gallen gets out of the unblemished, forcing Semien and Seager out via flyout and ground out before taking Evan Carter down via strikes. Just what the All-Star Game starter needed.

8:00 p.m.: And we’re off! Gallen takes the mound as the Snakes look to keep their World Series hopes alive!

First inning

7:15 p.m.: Good pitching matchup on display today between the Rangers’ Nathan Eovaldi and the Diamondbacks’ Zac Gallen. Eovaldi was excellent in the regular season but struggled in his 2023 World Series debut, giving up five runs in 4.2 innings of work. Gallen has experienced similar difficulties, faltering vs. the Phillies before having a less than stellar Game 1 showing.
