Cue the Daft Punk Rumors: Fans Beg Robots to Reunite as "Tron 3" Filming Begins

Gone but not forgotten, fans are pleading with the dormant deities of Daft Punk’s timeless Tron score to reboot their creative engines once more.

The robots derezzed years ago, but their timeless TRON: Legacy soundtrack remains an indelible rupture in the Grid. Featuring an 85-piece orchestra, it remains Daft Punk’s only film score.

Filming has now officially begun on Tron: Ares, the long-awaited threequel in Disney’s iconic sci-fi series, which had languished in development hell since the studio pulled the plug in 2015. Production was set to resume last year but the film suffered another blow after its director, Joachim Rønning, shut down principal photography amid the contentious SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

And since this is 2024, when Daft Punk rumors are relentless but ultimately breadcrumbs leading nowhere, the digital grapevine of Tron’s Grid is once again alight with buzz. Fans are currently taking to social media en masse to spark a reunion.

Back in June 2023, a post in the official Tron subreddit called on users to suggest the robots’ successors. Electronic music producers named in the thread include Dan Deacon, Justice, Gesaffelstein, Kavinsky and Oneohtrix Point Never.

Many also believe renowned composer Joseph Trapanese, with whom Daft Punk worked to create the soundtrack for TRON: Legacy, is linked to the project. However, his involvement has yet to be confirmed.

Details surrounding the film’s plot are scarce at the moment, but it’s said to focus on “the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

Tron: Ares will star Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith with a script from Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. Leto is reportedly set for the titular role of Ares, the manifestation of the program.
