Jenna Ortega’s Latest Project Sets Unwanted Record At Box Office

‘Wednesday’ star Jenna Ortega has just set an unwanted record in her career as her latest project brought in dreadful box office numbers during its opening weekend.

Ortega’s latest movie, ‘Miller’s Girl‘, is considered a thriller drama and stars Ortega and ‘Black Panther’ star Martin Freeman.

‘Miller’s Girl’ premiered in US theaters on January 26, 2024 — and the numbers are not impressive.

The movie debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 33%, but it now has a 25% rating. It is projected to make only $321,000 during its opening weekend, which marks Ortega’s lowest-ever domestic opening weekend and her second-lowest opening per-screen average.

The Wall Street Journal claimed, “Only a generous grader would award this script anything better than a D-plus.”

While The New York Times called it “a work of glaring artifice.” The outlet added, “‘Miller’s Girl’, written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, is being touted as a psychological thriller, but it’s too vapid and silly to do much besides titillate.”

The film’s synopsis reads:

A talented young writer (Jenna Ortega) embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Martin Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.

Although the film has not brought in the numbers producers had hoped for, the filmmaker, Jade Halley Bartlett, did praise Ortega and how she handled the role, admitting she was “totally, totally surprised.”

“And she’s hysterical in that movie. She’s so funny,” Jade Halley Bartlett told ScreenRant, adding, “which is a weird thing to say about that movie. It’s not necessarily funny, but she’s very funny. She’s very charming. But when I met her on Zoom, she disarmed me so entirely.”

Jenna Ortega On Wednesday Addams

While her latest project is a huge disappointment for the actress, she is getting ready to reprise her role as Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s series, ‘Wednesday’, which has been a huge hit amongst fans.

When speaking on her iconic character, Ortega called her “a creepy, little freak,” adding, “But her impact is absolutely unparalleled. I’ve never seen a normal person bring a group together like this, and create a family like this, and create a legacy like this, and that’s just a testament that we need weirdos in the world, and they’re what make the world go around.”

“Be weird, watch the show like do what you want to do,” she continued. “And another beautiful thing too, about cinema and film is it should be reflective of what the real world is, but it’s a break from reality.”

The actress then went on to explain how “we want to go home and, you know, leave our jobs and watch something that makes our brain turn off for a little bit and gives us adrenaline and makes us happy and makes us sad,” adding that ‘Wednesday’ does just that, thanks to its “wide variety of characters,” which”brings so much emotion and that is the intention.”

“And again, just sit back, enjoy the show. Relate, don’t relate, that’s your business, not mine,” Ortega concluded.
