Man United vs Man City live score, result, updates, highlights, lineups from Premier League Manchester derby

Manchester United host Manchester City in the 191st Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Sunday.

City are aiming to close the five-point gap on early leaders Tottenham at the top of the Premier League, having returned to winning ways domestically with 2-1 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s European champions backed that up with a 3-1 midweek win at Young Boys in the Champions League, while United also prevailed on the European stage thanks to Andre Onana’s late penalty save against Copenhagen.

That marked a third win in succession for Erik ten Hag’s side across all competitions, although the sense is that they will need a vast improvement in performance against their near neighbours.

The Sporting News will be following the Manchester United vs. Manchester City match live, providing score updates, commentary, and highlights as they happen.

Man United vs Man City live updates, highlights, and commentary

10th minute: That chance seems to have settled City and rocked United back on their heels. A turnover in midfield gets Old Trafford up again, but Silva is back to avert the danger. McTominay, Rashford and Hojlund definitely give United a threat through the middle in transition.

8th minute: As is their wont, City keep the attack alive. Rodri floats a lovely ball to the back post, Walker nods back to Foden. Brilliant save from Onana to keep his header out… and again! The keeper gets a vital hand in to stop Haaland from turning home the rebound and Maguire scrambles clear.

7th minute: United have been calm and assured with the ball, most notably Onana settling into his playmaking from deep. City have a chance to attack but Grealish overhits his pass to Silva.

5th minute: Walker’s botched through ball leaves City facing exactly the sort of transition Guardiola will want them to avoid. Dias is backpedalling before Walker gets back to mop up.

4th minute: Now United get to show that out-of-possession prowess Ten Hag mentioned. They’re up for this, no doubt. McTominay tasked with following Rodri around to try and stop City getting into rhythm.

2nd minute: Rashford gets an early look at Dias. This is a promising United attack, with Amrbat shrewdly involved. It ends with Lindelof heading onto the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Now a chance for McTominay, who snaps into a challenge after Fernandes does likewise on Gvardiol. The Scotland international shoots when he perhaps should have played in Hojlund. Wake-up call for City.

1st minute: Scott McTominay kicks off. United better their efforts from the FA Cup final and make it to 12 seconds without conceding. That was no live-blogging picnic, let me tell you.

2 mins to kickoff: City and United greats from Charlton’s era are now on the pitch to a standing ovation. “There’s Only One Bobby Charlton” rings around the arena before a moment’s applause starts. Lovely moments.

5 mins to kickoff: The players are in the tunnel, United sporting black armbands. There is a “Sir Bobby” display across the stand bearing Charlton’s. Here they come, out into the Manchester autumn sunshine.

15 mins to kickoff: That eye-browing raising United defensive selection means Jonny Evans starts his first derby at Old Trafford since being sent off in City’s seismic 6-1 win 12 years ago. Since then, he’s been a transfer target for Pep Guardiola. It’s been an unlikely journey back to this point.

25 mins to kickoff: Now, this is interesting. Erik ten Hag says the decision to bench Raphael Varane is tactical and not down to fitness issues. So the veteran Jonny Evans has been preferred on merit. Has Ten Hag spotted something to suggest that a combination of Jonny Evans and Harry Magure’s physicality at centre-back is the best way of shackling Erling Haaland? We’ll soon find out. United have lost two Premier League games with Varane in the start XI and two without, but the ex-Real Madrid man seems to bring a level of assurance that they lack without him.

40 mins to kickoff: Scott McTominay feels like he will have a big role to play if United are to get anything today. Something of a cult hero for fans and not always a favourite of Erik ten Hag’s over recent months, the Scotland international does have a very memorable derby day moment to call upon from March 2020.

55 mins to kickoff: It’s a strong-looking City lineup. Ruben Dias and Ederson return, with Jack Grealish getting the nod over Jeremy Doku on the left wing.

1 hour to kickoff: The teams are in. The United defence has a very makeshift look about it, with Sergio Reguilon and Raphael Varane only fit for places on the bench. Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof start.

1 hr 10 mins to kickoff: In the face of criticism concerning the lack of progress in his tenure from former Liverpool player Jamie Carrragher, Ten Hag flagged up United’s prowess out of possession. That should come in handy today, given how City like to hog possession.

We are top in the Premier League in high ball regains, we are top in the Premier League in middle ball regains. Our pressing is always very good, so that is not the truth what he is telling.

“We are not consistently, in possession, on the level where we can be. “But [in] pressing, we are quite good. There you see, our defensive organisation, our pressing organisation. I said before the season how we wanted to play. That is us.

But then, we don’t take the benefit in the attacking transition moments, and we should be because we have the abilities in our team. This has to progress. Then games will become easier.

1 hr 30 mins to kickoff: We’re half an hour away from confirmed team news. Erik ten Hag would be handed a huge boost if Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro make it through late fitness tests. Who Wan-Bissaka or Diogo Dalot are up against at right-back is the big element of intrigue for City, with Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku vying to start on the left wing.

1 hr 50 mins to kickoff: Speaking at his pre-match news conference, Guardiola spoke of his pride with regards to shifting the balance of power in Manchester. Alex Ferguson once remarked that United did not see City as their main rivals. Guardiola believes the success of his treble-winning side now means the reverse is true.

Sir Alex was right. City were not challengers. Without the presence of Sheikh Mansour and Khaldoon [City, the chairman], when they took over and made an investment, like when United and Arsenal were the richest clubs, we were not there. In that moment, Sir Alex Ferguson could not expect what has happened – even myself when I was in Barcelona I thought the same.

But now it’s the reality and we want to stay here for as long as possible. Maybe it is uncomfortable that we were not in the elite – but now we are and maybe it is uncomfortable for them. We are there now and we want to be there in the future.

Absolutely. The most [satisfying thing] is that we did not just do something good for one year.

2 hrs 10 mins to kickoff: This is fixture with one of the richest history in English football. It is therefore fitting that both teams and sets of fans get a chance to pay their respects to the late Bobby Charlton this afternoon – arguably the greatest player to grace this rivalry.

Man United vs Man City lineups, team news

United were waiting on the fitness of Casemiro and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, although neither made the starting XI.

Raphael Varane and Sergio Reguilon only made the bench to add to Ten Hag’s defensive woes, with Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof coming into the back four, the latter as a make-shift left-back.

Bruno Fernandes looks set to start in the front three alongside Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford, with Scott McTominay joining Sofyan Amrabat and Christian Eriksen in midfield.

Man United lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Onana — Dalot, Maguire, Evans, Lindelof — Eriksen, McTominay, Amrabat — Fernandes, Hojlund, Rashford.

Onana; Dalot, Maguire, Evans, Lindelof; Amrabat, McTominay, Eriksen; Fernandes, Hojlund, Rashford

Pep Guardiola rotated his lineup and made seven changes for the 3-1 Champions League win over Young Boys in midweek. His main stars came through unscathed, with only long-term absentee Kevin De Bruyne (hamstring) on the sidelines.

John Stones made his first Premier League start of the season last weekend and is set to feature in his hybrid defender/midfielder role, although fellow centre-back Manuel Akanji is suspended. Guardiola’s main selection quandary was who to select on the left wing and Jack Grealish got the nod ahead of Jeremy Doku.

Man City lineup (3-2-4-1, right to left): Ederson (GK) — Walker, Dias, Gvardiol — Rodri, Stones — Silva, Foden, Alvarez, Grealish — Haaland
